Advances in Hair Transplantation

Hair implantation is a technique that has been evolving over time as this type of procedure has become more popular. Previously and for many years the follicles were removed along with the scalp with the technique known as FUSS or strip, and then implanted in the area where the person presented some type of baldness, which generated that the area from which they were extracted was left without hair and with scars that, despite being covered by the rest of the surrounding hair in the area represents an unaesthetic procedure because the scars are evident.

For this reason, with the advances in hair transplantation the technique presented a significant variation, the FUE technique (Follicular Unit Extraction), with which the follicles are manually removed one by one and in an intercalated manner from a more populated area of the head, to then be implanted (or transplanted) in the area/areas where the individual presents some type of alopecia, This has generated that many people with hair loss problems can practice this procedure, because the area from which the follicles are extracted can be easily covered with the rest of the hair present, it does not leave a scar, nor is the loss of follicular mass evident.

Ideally, the follicles to be transplanted should be from the back of the head, since they are genetically resistant to the DHT hormone that causes alopecia. However, they can be extracted from other parts of the body such as the beard, chest or legs; however, not many people opt for this alternative since the texture and speed with which this type of hair grows is not the same as that of the head, which would generate the possibility that the implant would be evident.

It must be taken into account that this is a procedure whose duration varies from 4 to 10 hours according to the number of follicles to be transplanted, since at first they must be extracted one by one, and then implanted in a unitary manner in the area that requires it.

This is a procedure that, despite being definitive, is not like any other aesthetic procedure, in which the results are However, people should keep calm and wait since the follicles are still “seeded” and with patience and care they will grow in the following months, that is why it is important to be well advised before having this type of surgery, since it is vital that the person is clear about the waiting time and all the phases involved in the growth of new hair, which can range from 4 to 12 and even 16 months.

It is important to clarify that the hair transplant cannot be done with the donation of another person, because as it is done with any type of organ donation, this would entail a compatibility study and all the treatment that a human being must undergo to receive an organ from another person, which would not only increase the costs of the surgery, but would also entail another type of risk for the recipient.

In time, new advances in hair transplantation may emerge.Nowadays, studies are already being carried out to extract stem cells from the follicles of an individual to be reproduced in a laboratory and later injected into the scalp, in this way thousands of follicles would no longer have to be extracted for transplantation, but with just one sample thousands of follicular cells could be cultivated and in this way the donor area would no longer be a problem, but be careful: these are not the stem cell treatments that are currently offered in which not even tissue samples are taken from the patient and whose effectiveness is not proven, we are talking about a complex process that involves the development of new organs from genetic reproduction in the laboratory.
